We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jorge Garcia of ISIS Services will be presenting at the April Hantel lecture. Many of us know Dr. Garcia from his past lives at BAbCO and Covance. He is a veterinarian by training and has a vast experience in the area of animal testing for the medical industry. Some of the topics Dr. Garcia plans to cover are:

1)       Purpose of Animal Testing –

a.       What you can expect to learn and what you’ll have to wait for until human testing.

b.       Differences between animals and humans (temperature, blood pressure, etc.)

c.       Differences between animal and human preparation (medications, cleaning, etc)

2)       Animal Model selection

a.       What animals are commonly used for various types of devices/procedures

b.       Pro’s and cons of different animal species

3)       Protocol requirements and the approval process

4)       Necropsy

a.       Tools available for tissue analysis

b.       Information that can be gained

5)       Example case studies that went well and didn’t go well with lessons learned

The Hantel Lecture series takes place on the last Wednesday of every month at Hantel. The lectures cover a wide range of topics that are pertinent to the medical device and biotech industries. In the past, we have covered topics such as adhesive joint design, plasma surface treatment, and the European Reduction of Hazardous Waste Directive. Attendance is open to technical personnel in the medical device and biotech industries. Attendance is free, but we do ask that you register prior to attending.
